A Very Macon Weekend

It’s been a while since I wrote about my various goings out and that type of thing. This website/blog has been many different iterations over the years! It started out as a fashion blog, a spin off of a column I wrote for a local magazine, and then I started writing more about cooking and going out and that type of thing. It was an era when it was still kind of hard to build a website and a lot of people were still using sites like Blogger for their online content.

This site first started out under the brand name Make It Work Molly- because my column was called Make It Work. And then Southern Bon Vivant (you can still see that in the URL because moving over ten years of content to a new URL is hard and I need help) when I started bringing in other writers and doing even more travel content.

The shift to Love, Molly Kate happened around the time of the pandemic. Travel writing was just not happening, and I no longer had a team of writers. A lot of my writing became more introspective, especially over the past year as I started discerning ministry work.

But that doesn’t mean that I don’t still want to write about the fun things I get to do, especially with my family. A lot of that content still lives on my social channels as well. It just so happens that what we had going on this weekend is also something I’d like to explore in more than just a 30 second Instagram Reel.

First up was First Friday, and honestly I didn’t get many photos because I was on a date and so I didn’t want to be rude by pulling my phone out for photos. But I did get some awesome selfies at Philosophie before my date got there and I’m just thrilled my hair cooperated.

All that said, I can tell you we went by the many art exhibits downtown and there’s a lot of really cool shows up. Macon Arts Alliance, the 567, and the Wesleyan CEO Leadership lab were all places we stopped by.

Macon Arts Alliance

This month’s show is the Plein Air art show, where artists showed their work that they completed while outside. I especially loved seeing Micah Goguen‘s work, as he is a former student of mine (back when I taught a class on PR & social media marketing for creatives at the former Ampersand center). As someone who has been a part of the Macon art scene since literal birth/in the womb (my mother and grandmother were members of these organizations in their infancy… my grandmother has been showed not just in Macon but all over the country and my mother was a prominent art teacher at a local school) it’s really nice to see how our art scene has grown over the years.

the 567

Dylan Treend is the featured artist, and I really regret not grabbing photos here – there’s a lovely variety of his work here as well as those of others. I would also say if you’re someone who loves to buy art these were at some really good price points. Take advantage of it while you can!

Wesleyan CEO Leadership Lab

Admittedly I’m writing this as I’m trying to stay awake, so I’ll need to update when I can find more information on these artists shown but there were some truly amazing works of art. Things that draw you in and make you want to stay and think about them.

The next day I had my first visits in Elizabeth’s Vintage store downtown- which my daughter declared to be “heaven”. I’m going to make a whole other IG Reel about it because she made some funny statements while there and I just can’t do them justice here. Then I took my oldest son to Macon Rocks climbing gym- thanks to my brother. And I’m not sure why I over thought going there so much- I thought we had to sign up for a certain time and such but no…. you can really just drop in, (Oh God no pun intended I swear!) My kid also got embarrassing video of me and my panicked moment over thinking belaying down and hitting the wall, I’m not too proud to share it, smh.

And then Sunday was, as always church- but also a stop in to Bearfoot to see friends (Nancy and Rachelle!) while another friend (Andrea!) hosted her podcast and interviewed another friend/also client (Dr. Ellis!).

This is the kind of weekend that renews my soul in this town- and reminds me that even when I doubt myself I am a part of this place. That doubt comes at really weird times, usually in moments of exhaustion and frustration at whatever thing is going on. But this is home, and I am proud of it.
