Prayer & Action

I watched what happened yesterday in absolute horror. I think most of us did.

I haven’t written as much here lately because it felt so frivolous to write about the fun of Southern culture- when so much of it is built on pure ugliness.

I know something about it- it took up a large part of my thesis that I have been writing for my Masters program. I did a LOT of academic research on it, and while I’m not posting it here because I’m looking for a journal… I feel like I can talk a little bit about it.

What happened yesterday has been said is unprecedented. Perhaps on it’s surface it is. We haven’t seen citizens storm the Capitol and take it by force. No one has taken it by force since the War of 1812 when we were in war with Britain.

But guys- friends- the root cause of it all has been here this whole time. Our country was built upon the evils of slavery and racism. Before you tune me out, just… think about it for a moment. Our whole economy- North and South- was dependent upon it. And in so many ways that aren’t obvious. Life insurance companies started out by insuring the lives of slaves- paying out their deaths to the people who OWNED THEM. These companies put on their commercials statements about building generational wealth… this generational wealth that was literally built upon the backs of human beings.

I’ve done my family research. I am a direct beneficiary of this. I’ve seen the slave schedules, the names (when they were recorded) of the men and women that my ancestors owned.

I see the Confederate flags that were paraded about by those who attempted that coup- and there’s a reason they are there. They are not harmless. They are a symbol of power to those people.

I beg of your forgiveness in this stream of consciousness writing that I am doing right now- but I am heartbroken. Heartbroken but not naive. This is not a new threat. Not even just during the past four years, but ever since 1619 when the first humans were brought here. We have sown this soil with the blood of our brothers and sisters this entire time. How is this related, you may ask?

Again, did you see the symbols of the Confederacy that were being carried?

The question is- will we take it seriously now? I am praying- but what does prayer without action get us?

For me… my action is to educate myself more. The places I started were podcasts. Here’s some of my favorites below…
