The Last Lunch: Satterfields

I remember, vaguely, going to Satterfields as a very little thing. But my first solid memory of the place was when I was perhaps in the third grade.

There was a “Pig Art Contest” that a bunch of us participated in at school, I think it may have been a part of the Cherry Blossom Festival, and I made a clay pot-bellied pig. It laid on it’s back, and had a chef’s hat, but looked as if it could stand on two feet.

I vividly remember walking into the tent with my mother to look over all of the contest entries, quite sure I hadn’t won but still hopeful that I had.

I saw this amazing looking sculpted pig face attached to a sock, and it had written “1st Place” on it. It was next to mine, and I was disapointed but knew that piece was better than mine. But I thought it was odd that they had written in gold glitter glue on a contest entry.

About two beats later my mom pointed out that was the trophy and I HAD WON! I was delighted and surprised. The winnings included a gift certificate to dinner at Satterfields. At that time, if I’m remembering correctly, one could go to evening dinner there.

They had my piece on display as the winner, along with others from years past, and they asked if they could keep it. But no, I wanted my work back and they let me have it. But I’ll never forget that was my very first art award.

Aside from that, this is a spot where I have met with friends and co-workers for many lunches. Even meeting my mom for lunch, she happens to be my favorite lunch partner. I can look on the walls and see familiar framed photos and articles. I’ve even written plenty of food articles about this place for many a publication.

It’s the end of a Macon institution 😭

I’m going to be sad to see them go, but also happy for owner John McCord. Besides, one can still make their way up to Fish & Pig anytime they get a craving for his food. Or, if you’re lucky like me, I get to have some of his ‘Que at the family Christmas Eve gathering.

Gotta indulge one last time in #bananapudding from Satterfields
