WTH Do I Wear This For This Occasion: A Guide to Men’s Dressing from a Woman’s Perspective- Part 1
It’s really exhausting. To hear a grown man complain about having to wear whatever outfit you took the time to pick out for him. Most of the time, I don’t really care but if it’s a particular occasion- don’t complain. Just go with it. Why? Well, there are several reasons. For one- we generally know the occasion better than you and two- if we pick it out, we are more likely to want to take it off. Capishe? Right.
But for those of you stubborn fools who would rather figure it out on your own, let me go ahead and dispense some advise here for different situations. This way you will have consulted a bonefide female without having to admit it, unless you want to win my undying love by telling everyone.
In fact, as I write I realize this should be a multi part lesson. Let’s start with suits. When to wear suits. Honestly, for me it’s more like when NOT to wear a suit! I love love love a man in a suit. Ever since I was a young child in fact. My very first “boyfriend” at the age of four won me over with his seersucker suit in church. Seriously.
Be really. Suits. If you are a professional man and out in the real world this should be a staple of your wardrobe. You should have a black suit, pinstripe, beige, seersucker (if in warmer weather) and a navy at least. I would also argue for a worsted wool and a tweed. You should wear them to work, if your job even remotely hints at wearing them. Even if you can get away with khakis and a polo or button up, you should be wearing a suit. They command instant respect and frankly, for me, sex appeal.
So, wear them to work. Also, first dates. A first date should be a nice, respectable restaurant unless you know the young lady would rather be out elsewhere. And even if this is a restaurant you frequent and you can get away wearing something else, wear a suit.
Any kind of concerts or events that remotely hint at upscale propriety- like the Macon Symphony this weekend. I am going to have my eyes open to see how many suits I see! (I would even argue this type of event could demand a tux but that will be another lesson.)
And really even wearing a suit jacket with chinos or jeans is SO incredibly sexy- add in the tie and you can really win me over as well as most women. If nothing else, just keep the following in mind:
