Teachers Are Special {Because}

I come from a family of educators: my mother, both grandmothers, two great-grandmothers were all teachers- my great-uncle was a professor who spent his life floating around between various military universities before retiring from Emory.

Today my son spends his last day as a pre-kindergardener, finishes his first year of being in school. This year, for the first time, summer break means something in our house. This summer is the last one before my daughter starts pre-kindergarden and my son begins the first of many years at Vineville Academy.

To say I am sentimental about it really doesn’t do my feelings justice.

So I may have gone a little bit overboard with my son’s teachers presents. A few Bath and Body Works items, a mini pound cake by Caroletta’s Cake at The Casserole Shop, and a gift card to The Moonhanger Group.

There has been controversy at a local private school. I’ll talk more about that later in another post, but it really just made me think even more about how much we don’t support our teachers. They damn sure don’t get paid enough. And yet so many times they use their own money for various students needs. My own cousin Summer is a great example- she bought all 27 of her kindergarden students suits and dresses for their graduation. If that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye then I don’t know what will.

And this is not uncommon. There are teachers everywhere doing things just like this. I think it’s rather clear our education system isn’t perfect, and that goes for anywhere. There are many places doing a hell of a better job of it- but I have to wonder are any of these teachers anywhere really getting what they deserve in return?

So, as I was running around gathering the various items for my son’s teachers presents, I thought I would give away another set to a deserving teacher. Bath and Body Works items, a Caroletta’s Cake pound cake, and a $50 gift card to Dovetail/The Rookery for those in the Middle Georgia area. If you don’t live in Middle Georgia, I will substitute a Coach clutch in it’s place. It’s just something little I can do to show y’all are appreciated.

    I would love to nominate my younger sister, Ashley Davidson. She is a special needs teacher for the Bibb County school system and she will be seflessly relocating to the Savannah area to spread her gift to other very special students. While in school for her bachelors and masters in geology in the northeastern US, Ashley also volunteered with several autistic and special needs organizations. It was then that she realized that her love for rocks, minerals and exploration was matched with her ability to reach students who are developmentally challenged as well. Her ability to reach her students is phenomenal and her stories brings tears to my eyes oftentimes. During the bitter cold of this past winter, her students with teeth chattering and not being able to concentrate because they did not have long pants, jackets or blankets. And my sister gave of her personal belongings to her children so that they would be able to learn in a more comfortable environment. It is just one of many things that my sister has gone above and beyond in and out of the classroom because she loves teaching. This past week has been very bittersweet for my sister as she is moving to another school district but the hugs and “I love you Miss Ashley and you are my favorite person” has just solidified that teaching, no matter the geographical location, is the right place for her. And for that, Ashley is my hero!

    Respectfully submitted,
    Tiffany L. Davidson
