Southern Style Sunday: Classic With a Twist

If I could sum up the theme of this season in fashion and the arts in one phrase, it would be “classic with a twist.” Recently, the Atlanta Ballet held their 2014 Corps de Ballet Kick-Off Luncheon to celebrate the start of the 2014-2015 Season. This luncheon, which took place in the ballroom of the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead, featured a private performance of a piece specifically choreographed for the event by Sean Hilton, a dancer with the ballet, and a fashion show curated by Neiman Marcus.

Hilton’s piece, which was set to Debussy’s Dr. Gradus ad Parnassum, featured elements of traditional and modern ballet in both the choreography, and the costumes themselves. The dancers embodied a whole spectrum of emotions and filled the stage with their abundant energy and enthusiasm, not to mention the precision and intricacy of their movements.

The fashion show featured inspired variations on fall silhouettes and colors . The team at Neiman Marcus put together already striking pieces with surprising accents to bridge classic style with modern edge. Although some of the pieces would likely be too elaborate or impractical for wear on a normal basis, some of the trends like pairing statement evening booties with an LBD, an ornate jacket with an evening gown, and a leather jacket and glitzy heels with a ladylike ensemble, could be easily incorporated for a fall wardrobe that sets itself apart.

This season, expect to see unexpected interpretations of fall both on and off the runway; outerwear featuring Eastern-European embellishments, rocker chic making its way into uncharted territory, and booties entering the evening wear scene. Reinvent and re-imagine outfits you already own with this dual flair and you’ll be well on your way to a stylish fall-into-winter look.
