Not a Regular Mom, Not a Cool Mom

I think I’m a pretty cool mom- and I felt like I looked the part especially today in my Ray-Bans and cute outfit as I dropped my oldest off at school.

But he’s not the deciding factor.

Nope, that would be my tween daughter. According to her, as of late, I am most decidedly uncool.

She would never say it out loud but trust me- the eyerolls say it all. And I know she won’t say it out loud because when I ask her what’s with the ‘tude she gives a very convincing response of “I don’t know what you’re talking about”.

Picture my own side eye response here as I bite my tongue until it dang near bleeds.

“Mom you look like you’re trying to be twenty,” my daughter says to me about my outfit.

Here’s the thing- there’s a time when that would have really bothered me. But there’s something about turning 40 while also having a new baby, teenagers, new job, PhD program applications, kids activities, and a personal life that has long bit the dust that brings you to the point of just not giving a f*** anymore.

Therefore I have decided to embrace the uncool mom factor here. And… I don’t NEED my teenage daughter to think I’m cool.

I need her to:

Respect me

Respect my rules

Respect her teachers

Know she can come to me with her problems

and more.

But I don’t need her to see me as cool. I need to be approachable and understanding of course, but she also needs to see that I will draw boundaries and have high expectations. Because how else can she model that behavior for herself and her future relationships if she doesn’t see me modeling that for her and others?

Yep. I’m not a cool mom.

But I might have to further cement that conclusion of hers by dancing in Instagram Reel videos…. 😉 nothing wrong with keeping her humble, either.
