Never Liked Pimento Cheese

Badly made pimento cheese might be one of the worst culinary creations on Earth.

It seemed like every Southern wedding, funeral, event and gathering I attended as a kid seemed to have this awful creation. And my mother always seemed to try to push one of them, sat in between triangles of dry white bread, on me.

Nope. Not doing it.

As a result, I never did like the stuff.

As I became older it dawned on me that this was a very Southern creation, and how could I be a true Southern Belle if I didn’t like it?!

My mother also didn’t have her own recipe, and while I’m sure there is one in my family somewhere, it was never made because my father was a meat and three kind of guy. And the three generally came from cans.

Gross.

But my life was changed as an adult when I was presented with a meat & cheese board at The Rookery and tried their pimento cheese. This was when I learned that I actually could like the stuff I had grown up to hate.

Then there came a sample of Phickles Pickles line of pimento cheese, and then came some recent samplings of Proper Pepper Get Back Jack Pimento Cheese. My life is forever changed, y’all.

While I’m not sure if I can eat a whole sandwich of it- I have had the Proper Pepper cheese (purchased at Village Marketplace in Ingleside Village) almost daily on crackers. Sometimes even topped off with jelly.

Try it- you’ll be changed.

Love to all y’all,
