Tacky Wine

In the past I have written about my struggles with wine: the fact that I can’t ever drink more than one glass out of a bottle, mainly due to the fact that I am the only real wine drinker in my house.

So when I went to Fresh Market to grab a quick meal the other day, I thought “Gee- how nice wouldn’t it be to have a glass of wine with my meal?” Then I thought “Gee- wouldn’t it be nice if I could buy a split bottle of wine?” I looked around the wine section just in case, pretty sure my search would be to no avail.

I saw nothing that I was looking for and then I went to check out. It was at that time that I spied a rack of small bottles of wine. I had totally forgotten about these… shall we say… popular with the average wine drinker brands of wine.

So yes, I am a wine snob. So much so that I was really kind of embarrassed to pick up the wines. I got a bottle of red and a bottle of white.

I went home, and there the wine sat. The white needed to chill, and I was hungry then. So I ate my salmon (which was sadly overcooked) and went along with my evening. The next night, while eating a piece of pie, I figured why not? I’ll go ahead and open the white, it’ll likely be horrible with lemon pie but I bought it and now I need to drink it.

So…. it wasn’t horrible. But it wasn’t all that great either. Note: lemon pie is probably best served with a sweeter wine, maybe a moscato.

And also, this particular wine got worse the closer to room temperature that it got. It’s been my experience that most good wines are better the closer to room temperature that they get, otherwise you’ll have to drink it super fast and then what’s the point?

The wine I had last night, with a much better salmon dish- by the way, was a good example of that. The Infinite Monkey Theorum Semillion Wine at Dovetail was tart at first- but not in a bad way. However once it sat for a minute or two it would open up nicely and definitely paired well with the fish.

So…. “tacky wine” isn’t always bad necessarily- but the good stuff (and good food) is a hell of a lot better.

Oh, and, even the small bottles of wine have more than one glass in them- so I’m sure I’ll still end up wasting some. Better off buying one glass in a restaurant and enjoying it- and you have a bartender available who knows the wines, maybe better than you do.
