Petit Four War- {Round Dos- 2}

Pheeeew weeee y’all…. I’m not going to even step on the scales today.

Yesterday was one of those days in which I quite literally ate my sorrows away, and then forced myself off to the gym rather late in the evening because I. Just. Had. To.

Aside from my family deciding to order pizza for dinner, and my son deciding he wanted the cookies that come with it too, I stopped in the Hoyt’s Meat Market. And I was at Hoyt’s the day before, too.

It was time to do Round 2 of my self declared Petit Four War. But on Thursday, Wilson’s pop up counter inside of Hoyt’s Meats was out of petit fours. So I got those smiley face cookies.

Note of warning: those damn cookies might LOOK innocent with their smiling faces up at you, but the chocolate reeks of sinister death to your waist line- tasting dangerously close to the same chocolate as Krispy Kreme donuts. And because they taste so close to it, you have to eat another, and another and maybe even one more just to verify and before you know it you ate the whole damn box. Fail.

There was one cookies left in the box for Friday, and I had already asked the lady manning the Wilson’s Counter at Hoyt’s to hold a box of petit fours for me for the next day. Crap.

And I just realized- I may have gotten WAY ahead of myself. Wilson’s is a bakery in Warner Robins, and it’s one of the few things Maconites will freely admit to driving to Warner Robins for. I myself have never been but always intended to. I feel like we may have ordered Wilson’s baked goods through my sorority at Mercer, though. But Wilson’s now has a counter at Hoyt’s Meat Market on Vineville in Macon. Genius.

So I knew on Friday I would be going back, but that one leftover cookie was placed in my son’s lunch for Friday. He was going to be the cool kid with the special cookie at school. I was one proud mama. But when I picked him up, bleary eyed as he was from just waking up, his teacher told me his cookie was in his backpack. He had run out of time to eat it in the all of 30 minutes they give them at school.

First thing little B did was not put on his seatbelt like Mommy told him- heck no he reached in his very full backpack for his cookie.

All to find that it had broken.

Tears. Gnashing of teeth. More tears sobbing from his very much broken little heart.

Mommy goes to buckle him in, tears still streaming from his eyes down his pink cheeks. I had not picked up little sister yet, so I said “B- do you want to go get LK first or get some cookies?” I had to ask three times before I got the “Coo- coo- cookies” sobbed in response.

Now, y’all likely don’t know this about me but I have some… let’s call them particular tendencies. One of them is I like to not backtrack when traveling, even while running errands. To go to Hoyt’s and then go back to daycare would mean I would end up passing Hoyt’s twice, and I like to travel from point A to B to C in one concentric circle. Not point A to C then back past A to get to B. It really really aggravates me deep down inside.

But- my little B wanted his cookies then. And I figured, why not? We’ll get the petit fours for my story and get some cookies and when we get LK she can have a cookie too.

So that’s what we did. And I didn’t even make it out of the parking lot before I gratified myself with a petit four. My pseudo-journalists mind just had to know right then and there how were those petit fours?!

And they were good. Very good. Incredibly moist and delicious. The closest thing to Waldorf’s petit fours than I have had in some time. They’re more square in shape, the Waldorf ones were more like a rectangle, and they have the familiar flower up top.

Despite their rather small size, you need two hands to eat them because the cake part is so airy and light that they easily break apart after the first bite- and not in a bad way. In the way that you need to just eat more. They’re a little sweeter than the last batch I sampled, but not overpowering. I would attribute that to the smaller size.

All in all, so far both petit four places have won my heart. And I know there are more places in town that have them- but do they have them available on the fly? I stopped in one place that makes them but not for retail sale. Does any one know of any other places? I wouldn’t mind a round 3 of this war….
