Lest My Heart Forget a Beat

The music rang soft and loud, with lights streaming alternating behind them. Large sounds coming from two jointed voices singing in harmony against each other.

Shovels & Rope often provided the anthem for my life as I found myself working my way out of the life of a divorced woman, and back into reclaiming what it means to be me.

Sunday the 24th was the first time I got to see them live- despite their frequent trips to Macon, before reaching fame. They even recounted some of those times during their “An Evening with Shovels & Rope” performance, reflecting on how much my city has changed and evolved since then. I found it appropriate that I witnessed some of the agents of that change in the audience, it must have felt good to hear.

The additional anecdotes, of coming across a Mardi Gras wedding in New Orleans, and more, were fun to hear. The personal moments that one doesn’t get without more intimate settings.

It was a fun evening, set in a box above the show, with friends new and old along with my love- the one who shares my home as well as the music.

I am reminded how grateful I am for the good people in my life, and that it’s time to start seeing more of them again- to step out from a self-imposed sanctuary of home renovations, new school changes, kids activities, and all.

Love to all y’all,
