Gameday Fashions: Do Gator Fans Really Wear Cut Off Jean Shorts?

I think we’ve all heard the slur- Gator Fans Wear Jean Shorts. Today I wondered, where did this come from?

keepin’ it classy, guys

When I first Googled “Florida Gators Jean Shorts” I actually got a wide array of links that seem to support that Gator Fans do, indeed, wear a lot of jean shorts.

AND the website says they are sold out and on back order, hmmm

Now, one may ask- why does this even matter? Well aside from the general problem of looking, well how can I say this nicely, not exactly fashionable? Most other schools in the SEC have a standard of dressing up for games. In Athens and Tuscaloosa and elsewhere you will even see men getting in to it, with their red and crimson chinos and black shirts.

So I wonder, do Florida fans really wear jeans shorts to games? I still haven’t found a concrete answer so I Googled “Do Florida Fans Wear Jeans Shorts to Games”. Being a little more direct couldn’t hurt, right?

And I ran across this interesting article at: http://www.gatortailgating.com/content/the-real-story-behind-gators-wear-jean-shorts. No surprise, this Florida fan claims that a Georgia fraternity member (and it’s always the frat guys we blame for something obnoxious) who was frustrated over Georgia’s continued losses to Florida made this up as an insult, upon seeing a Florida fan in jeans shorts. Apparently it spread like wildfire from there, as we can now see.

This Gator fan and fellow writer debates how the Gator Nation should combat this sullied reputation: should they embrace it or encourage others to stop wearing the shorts?

Me- as a Georgia fan I think it’s funny whenever I see it happening. As a fashion writer, I clearly cringe inside. And sometimes on the outside too. ( I just cannot help it.) Although I am told by my Facebook friends who are also Florida fans that the great majority of them do dress appropriately.

So, my research proves inconclusive. I suppose I’ll just have to take that dreaded trip to Gainesville and see for myself sometime. But, until then, it’s still kind of fun to make fun of my Gator friends.
