Creating Some Community Fun: Macon Parks and Recreation
I have to be honest, I never really paid much attention to what my own Parks and Rec department had to offer until fairly recently.
It was through my friendship with Frank Dixon that I realized the Macon-Bibb Parks and Recreation Department was truly working on creating some fun community activities. And then this past summer, through becoming friends with Ellen Banas, I learned about the community theater program the city was offering *for free* for kids. So I thought, what can it hurt? I enrolled my kids in the program and they LOVED it.
So I was not terribly surprised to find out that Macon-Bibb Parks and Rec was planning a free movie series at Luther Williams Field- the first two were rained out but this next one is THIS Saturday, the 21st and they will be showing the (new) How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
From the Facebook event page:
Movie goers can choose to sit up in the stands or hang out on the green near the bonfires. Coolers and outside food are permitted however we will have hot chocolate, coffee, popcorn, and candy for those last minute snacks!
Gates will open at 5:00, movie will begin at 6:00, this is a free event so grab a blanket and head on down to the stadium!
I mean really, how cool is it that we have a free community event like this?!
And while reading over the newsletter, I had a revelation: they also provide activities for kids during the holiday when school is not in session. I realized this afternoon that Christmas break is two weeks long- with school letting out this Friday and not starting back until the 6th of January. I thought to myself- wow that’s a really long time. For people who don’t have the liberty of staying at home with their kids, as I do, this must be a welcome service. If you know someone in this position have them check this out:
Winter Holiday Camp– Looking for something for the kids to do while they are out of school? Bring them to LH Williams for a free holiday camp from 11am-3pm on December 23rd & 26-27th. The fun camp will keep them out of trouble and engaged in arts & crafts activities, and athletics! (from the newsletter)
And- if you would like a community service event, how about feeding the homeless? Macon-Bibb Parks and Rec has an event for this as well:
