Amanda Pearl: The Interview

So, I first ran across Amanda Pearl via Twitter… not exactly sure of the details other than that. For those of you who are not familiar with her and her designs then you are sadly missing out. Many of her items have been featured on the hit t.v. show “Gossip Girl”. In a world where many go for the cheap, quick fashions- Amanda Pearl embodies everything that is exquisite about fashion: artistic, unique, craftsman style quality that none can hold a candle to. These rich designs are inspired of an era long ago, thankfully bringing back everything that was good and tasteful to fashion. It’s very easy to put together a design without much thought, and caving in to whatever aesthetic is most popular at the time but Amanda Pearl has stuck to her own vision and luckily, the fashions have moved with it.

Imagine my utter joy and surprise when THE Amanda Pearl responded to my Twitter request for a blog interview! I was frankly shocked that she responded, but here it is for all of you to read!

MIWM: Hello there!
I’m so thrilled to be speaking with you! I’ll go ahead and get started…
What made you decide to design bags and jewelry? Who are your inspirations?

AP: *** I have always loved to create things and had been collecting beads and fabric, so started to make jewel-like evening bags after I graduated from college as I was looking for a job.  I launched my collection with handbags, as there was a dearth in the market at the time.  Things really came full circle when I added jewelry a year later, which seemed a really natural extension from the handbags.

I am inspired by people who are passionate about what they do and what they believe in.  People who march to the beat of their own drum and try to effect change to make the world a saner, more educated, more compassionate, more beautiful world.

Pure OMG

MIWM: Your website says you started working with Marc Jacobs: what gave you the courage to venture on your own?

AP: *** I was entrepreneurial from a young age, devising little businesses and making and selling things, so I suppose it wasn’t a surprise that I would venture on my own at some point.  I think my courage came from having no idea what I was actually getting myself into.  I’d worked for other people, but still somehow never appreciated what it would take.  Any sane person wouldn’t launch this sort of business if they knew what they were in for!

MIWM: Why such attention to detail, when you could have just as easily gone with mass production?
AP: *** There is plenty out there that is mass produced and I didn’t have any interest in trying to compete with that.  What I thought was missing and what I was interested in was product made in a more artisanal way–product that was handmade with all of the details that make vintage pieces so charming and soulful.
beautiful for a wedding...
MIWM: You seem to make good use of social media, do you have a team that assists you with this? Or do you sometimes speak directly to your followers?
AP: ***  Thank you.  I have someone help me a few hours a week with posting tweets that with themes that we’ve outlined together, but the rest is me.  I do enjoy communicating with fans of the brand and being able to answer questions and respond to comments directly, as well as share inspiration and other fun tidbits.  I do all of the posts and interaction on Facebook as well.

MIWM: How did you get your creations on Gossip Girl and in InStyle magazine? Did they approach you, or the opposite?

AP:*** The Gossip Girl costume department requested styles from the collection to be used on the show, but we also have fans in the cast who requested to be outfitted with pieces from the collection, which is amazing.  In terms of InStyle, here is a lot of back and forth with our PR office and the magazines, so sometimes an editor has seen a piece from the collection that they know that they want to pull for a shoot, and sometimes our PR office will suggest something if the magazine is working with a particular theme for a shoot.

MIWM: Where do you see your line heading in the future?

AP: *** I see things continuing to come together in terms of brand awareness and market share.  I see more and more lovely ladies enjoying Amanda Pearl bags and jewels!

MIWM: Who is your ideal consumer?
AP:*** My ideal consumer is someone who is uses fashion to make herself and those around her smile.  Someone who doesn’t save things for a rainy day or a special occasion–someone who lives life and enjoys little (and big) luxuries on a daily basis.  My ideal consumer is someone who would (at least in theory) wear diamonds to the beach and carry a fancy clutch to lunch!
Isn’t she fantastic?! I’m thinking this will be my next splurge purchase… maybe for the FOODIES awards? … problem is, choosing just one! Be sure to check out her site for yourself at www.amandapearl.com , and as always…

Good post. I study something more challenging on completely different blogs everyday. It’ll at all times be stimulating to read content from other writers and observe a little bit one thing from their store. I’d favor to make use of some with the content on my weblog whether or not you don’t mind. Natually I’ll give you a link in your internet blog. Thanks for sharing.
