Georgia Folks Are The Best

It’s funny in a way, we get made fun of here in the South for not being able to handle our snow. You can never accuse us of not being able to handle our liquor but snow? Well that gets us every time. We’re always the ones selling out the Kroger of bottled water, milk and bread for what usually turns out to be nothing. Hell even just a few weeks or so ago schools were shut down for what turned out to be nothing more than very cold weather. I say nothing but rather tongue in cheek because let’s be honest, the cold affects many who cannot keep their heat on, if they even do have a roof over their heads.

But yesterday, Atlanta was caught very much off guard. There’s been a lot of debate as to why and what could have been done to prevent it but what really got my attention was the SnowedOutAtlanta Facebook page, which has allowed us to get an intimate glimpse in to what people are really going through. To see people who are in some very desperate situations- parents stuck with infants, diabetics without supplies and more. It has been very scary to read and hard for even someone like me because I want so much to help and I know I can’t.

However- there are others who have helped. People reaching out and posting that they have supplies. People venturing out when they don’t have to. Opening up their homes to absolute strangers. Things that most of us would never do under ordinary circumstances but yet stepping up to the plate and helping out their fellow man.

My friend John Buckner has said before that Georgia folks are the best- and I would have to agree. To see people taking care of one another in such simple but very much needed ways is amazing. God bless each of you for being willing to stand up- to Michelle Sollicito for creating the Facebook page to help others. To those who created the emergency map within the page to identify those who urgently needed help. To the many many people who packed their cars with goods and opened their homes- to the businesses who without hesitation opened their doors and shelves for shelter and food- and to the teachers who bravely stayed with their students who must have been so scared. Prayers and thanks for each of you.

There is also another Facebook page just for those who can help to post on.
