The Best Crab Cakes (And More) In Macon

I don’t live in what’s known as a seafood town, it’s just what happens when you don’t live on the coast.

 

But I had some of the best crab cakes I’ve had in a long time the other night, and even more.

 

Where did I go? It was Bonefish at The Shoppes at River Crossing.

 

I’ll admit, I had only been there for the occasional appetizer before (I’m very familiar with their Bang Bang Shrimp) and a glass of wine. But I had never sat down to a full meal until a few days ago.

 

Their proprietor, Scott Sanders, let me know that their crab cakes were one of their best items. Now, I’m funny about crab cakes. I’ve had many that were filled with too much breading, or with mediocre crab meat, and the list of ways to screw up a crab cake goes on. But a really good crab cake is a thing of simplicity, and these were: a small amount of breading, and good-sized crab meat.

Even the house salad was lovely, and I generally don’t like a salad but this came with cherry tomatoes and pine nuts and some kind of light & lovely dressing.

Then it was time for the entrees: the lobster stuffed shrimp and the misoyaki sea bass. The sea bass came was prepared grilled over oak, then topped with misoyaki marinade & pickle ginger relish, on a bed of sautéed spinach, mushrooms, jasmine rice. The lobster stuffed shrimp came with six jumbo shrimp stuffed with lobster, red peppers, lemon butter, served on a bed of creamed spinach.

The photos really don’t do it all justice, but it was awesome to say the least. I was really pleasantly surprised to see how the shrimp were stuffed with lobster, and with the sea bass. I think the sea bass was narrowly my favorite between the two but Scott told me the lobster shrimp go out all the time- making them a Macon favorite. I wish I could remember the wine we had- and somehow I neglected to write it down- but it paired lovely with everything.

 

Then…. dessert. Chocolate creme brulee and key lime pie. Both were amazing but the key lime pie was the shining winner to me!
