The Weekend a Music Lover Was Born, A Food Alliance Was Born, And Even More
I often have crazy busy weekends, which is probably why this summer I toned it down. A lot.
My kids and I got a pool membership, I had a new job, and it was the first time I ever actually could carve out time to focus on them. For the first time in my kids’ lives, I could really focus on them. And just them. It’s been amazing.
Now, school has started back and with it- my crazy social schedule. Along with more traveling.
I’m reflecting on it all today as I drink my coffee, from my coffee machine I bought at Robinson Home, in my home near Tatnall Square Park, as my children play to music they heard from musicians they met last night. Macon plays a rich and large part of our lives.
Friday was spent going to the gym after work in order to prepare for a weekend that I knew would feature a lot of food and drink, and it was a good thing, too, because I didn’t really realize what all Saturday would bring me.
Saturday consisted of waking up, making breakfast for my kids, and getting them up and going so that I could make it to the Moveable Feast: Heritage event at Robinson Home.
We’re here at Moveable Feast!!

This event highlighted Comfort Farms, which cultivates this heritage pork- which it so much tastier than any other pork I’ve had. I also learned about the greater pork industry as a whole, how large producers are raising pigs here and then ship them off to China to be produced into what we buy in grocery stores. It’s so unnecessary! I’ve realized there’s so much more to learn about this.
But along with that, this farm works with Stags Vets – an organization which works with homeless vets to get them on the farm and help them to get connected to the VA and to be contributing members of society again. To help them. It’s important to help those who have been willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for us.
However, back to the food. Take a look at my video above to see what all was being prepped. The dumplings were absolutely sublime, and while I’m not much of a sauce person- this was just a perfect added touch to the dumplings. And to the fried rice, which I had later.
AND that cocktail good God Lord y’all- someone at the event said it was like a Capri Sun. I had two and it was just lovely. I wanted more- not to get drunk but just to enjoy.

After getting my fill of food and drink I left to go pick up my kids from my parents house and then to head out to a birthday party, where I saw many of my very favorite people and my kids got to visit with their friends.
Now, this is where I knew things would get complicated. Whenever it’s time to leave the pool my kids get squirrelly, and I really wanted to take them to the Corner Concerts event. They love music and generally do well watching it being performed. And since my son chose to take advantage of the free violin lessons at his Bibb County public school, I’m really trying to get him (and his sister) to more events where they can see music being performed.
So I may have told my kids I had a big surprise with them and let’s head towards the car. So they may have gotten upset when they realized it wasn’t *in* the car (I never said it was). So my son may have had a fit and said he didn’t want to go see music, and his sister said she did, and we had to have a discussion about not always getting our way… it ended up paying off in a really big way.
My daughter, LK, drew pictures of each music act and had asked for their autographs. She totally flipped out when the openers, Edison, didn’t just sign her drawing of them- but also gave her a CD. She literally ran around saying “oh my God! oh my God!” I honestly don’t know where she got the idea to ask for autographs but she loved the special one on one attention they gave her.
Then I agreed to buy a vinyl from Jared & The Mill when they were done and B, her brother, and LK got them to sign that- too. While talking to them I found out they had wanted to stop by The Cannonball House, where I am the Executive Director, but didn’t have time. So I told them to please come by next time they’re in town.
My kids have always been huge music fans, LK tends to sing and write her own songs and B is totally into his violin lessons. But this weekend, when they got to meet the musicians and high-five them afterwards- when the lead singer took the time to swing them around and participate in horseplay with them…. it really just made the whole experience special.
And that’s what’s really special about these events. We need to get better about supporting people who are bringing cool things to town. We need to meet chefs and artisans before they become huge superstars and help them on their way up. We need to support musicians as they are on their way up, when they can still play with our kids after their shows. And this way, the seeds of appreciation between all can be planted early.
What’s on tap to follow-up that amazing Saturday? Well, today it’s listening to new music with my kids, a later coffee with the new guy in my life, church late this evening… and gearing up for the following week which will include auditing a class at Mercer, the kickoff of college football, and an amazing night with Macon Pops. Even with the summer break of just hanging out with my kids, I’m able now that they are older to bring them to more things- to let them appreciate it all. It’s going to be a great fall, y’all.
Love to all y’all,
Molly
