Taste of Athens Just Around the Corner
While everyone is buzzing about the Grammy’s and Valentine’s Day, I can’t control my excitement for the 2015 Taste of Athens, because word on the street is it is getting a serious makeover. Taste of Athens will be scaling back, starting fresh, and taking a more chef-centric approach at this year’s event. The event will be characterized by an increase in intimacy, so that epicurean enthusiasts can fully immerse themselves in an experience with food.
As always, guests will sample chef-presented tastings; however, this year there are some surprising new additions that enhance the value of the event. James Beard Award-nominated sommelier Steven Grubbs and 5&10 resident sommelier Stephen James will present wine pairings for each delicacy, and there will also be a cocktail competition (swoon). For the first time, the event will feature live music, brought to you by DJ Mahogany and Caleb from the Darnell Boys (double swoon).
Bringing all aspects of Athens culinary scene into this event allows guests to fully engage with the local chefs and bartenders who are ready to share the stories that inspire their cuisine. As a die hard foodie, there is nothing more special to me than the expertise of the local food community, so I’m literally blushing thinking about the idea of brushing elbows with Joel Penn or Hugh Acheson. The thoughtfulness and passion that fuels this showcase is incredibly refreshing and inspiring to me, because an experience with food like this is so rare.
Most importantly, this event is the largest annual fundraiser for the Community Connection, which seeks to strengthen the individuals and organizations of our region to ensure that no need goes unmet. I believe that the most difficult challenge for organizations like this is to connect with those who have an interest with engaging with their communities. Some of us may know that we want to help those in need, but really have no idea where to get started. The Community Connection is responsible for combining impassioned volunteers (like you and me) with a non-profit service organization that best matches your interests, availability and skills. Rachel reminded me that,
“Giving back to the community doesn’t always involve putting on work gloves. We have need for volunteer coordination skills, community needs assessment, and countless other projects that require professional skills.”
This year’s Taste of Athens event will be truly reflective of Athens small yet vibrant culinary scene. Athens is a first class culinary tourism destination, and this year’s Taste of Athens event will showcase our best and brightest.
While I am excited about meeting some of Athens most recognized chefs, I am most excited about all the new talent coming to Taste of Athens this year. In the next few weeks, stay tuned for special interviews with: Viva!, Speakeasy, and South Kitchen and Bar!
