a summer strawberry stained mouth

he had

a summer strawberry stained mouth

and eyes glazed over

threatening to fall asleep

after an afternoon

filled with summer swimming

his sister

had already succumbed

with blonde, chlorine filled curls

fighting their way out of her fist

which held her sleeping head up

i watched them

intermittently

through the rear view

making short & long mental lists

of what i had left to do:

place aloe on sun stained cheeks

rubbing alcohol in water-logged ears

gentle baths to get them clean

Roth IRAs to set them up for long-term comfort

and lots of snuggles- all the time

so they can always know love
