Restaurants I (Macon) Miss(es)

I talk a lot about places that I’m going to and places that are open- but once a place closes, then what?

 

There’s one in particular that prompted me to write this, it was quickly becoming “my place”. A place where I could have an early afternoon glass of wine, or a coffee, and sit with my laptop or gather with friends. As my social life seems to shift from being out late at night to more of an early evening gathering before going home and getting to bed on time, I think it’s important to have these places where we can gather like that. Not a lunch spot, not a coffee-house, but a place with good food and a glass of wine should I choose.

 

I’m sure more of y’all know I’m talking about Robinson Home and Fork & Key. I loved it for all of the reasons listed above, but also because of the fun food items Chef Katie was putting together. And the people were awesome, too.

 

 

 

Thankfully, Chef Katie will be at Piedmont Brewery soon!

 

Reaching much further back is one that I’m sure many Maconites will agree with me on, and that’s Len Berg’s.

 

I’ll admit, I only went a few times, but Macon is a restaurant town and some places are just icons. This is one of them.

 

Another that I have a vague memory of is Napoli’s- over on Forsyth Road. It was fancy and good without being over the top fancy, as best as I can remember.

 

In the very same location, later, was Super Suppers! And they would later open up a lunch spot, I honestly can’t remember the name of it, but they had the BEST roasted red pepper soup.

 

 

Oh man and Dolce Vita, this one really hurts. I loved being able to go in there at any time of day for good tacos, their chai tea latte, or wine, and be able to lounge and do my work.

 

Trio- this is another one that hurts. This was when I first started hanging out downtown- back before First Friday was even a thing! I remember this was the first place that I got drunk on martini’s at, whoops. The first person who, um ahem, got me in there was Christian- the chef at Tic Roc Room at that time. We really need a classy piano bar again in this town.

 

Taylor Made was one that I went to a few times later on in college and I remember they had this really great menu.

 

Midtown Grill was another one I went to a few times, but my most vivid memory of going there was with a guy who was a Mercer Law student. For whatever reason I remember he transferred in from Pepperdine Law, and he was from Huntsville. Pretty sure he still practices there! And that he had spiked hair and he was a Democrat- this was when I was interning for Saxby Chambliss. Haha. I bet he would laugh to read my politics now!

 

Nuway on Cotton Avenue is one I’m hoping comes back soon. And thanks to my boyfriend’s sleuthing, we found out my great great-grandmother’s business was next door to them at one time. So I feel a little more special tie to it!

 

Luigi’s was the first place I worked in independent restaurants, then Dea (although a bar), then Tic Toc. I’ll always love Luigi’s.

 

I always saw Le Lavandier from the street and wished my parents would take me. (They didn’t.)

 

Metropolis is one that’s either moving downtown or remodeling, either way for right now they’re closed. 🙁

 

I was able to go to Bert’s right before they closed, and I so wished I had gone more when they were open.

 

JOSHUA CUP- good God that was the place that first got me hooked on coffee :'(

 

There’s so many good places, and I couldn’t remember which ones I loved and missed. So I asked y’all which ones Y’ALL loved and got so so so many answers. Shakey’s got a whole bunch of comments. Le Bistro, Leo’s, Yamato’s, Bennigan’s, Bia’s, Dano’s, Spaghetti Alley, Chesapeake Bagel Bakery (pretty sure I spent a whole summer there), El Indio’s (my Dad’s favorite!), The Green Jacket….

 

I think something we have learned here is that Macon is a town that loves and remembers its restaurants. Let’s make sure we support the people putting so much in to them 🙂

 

And the other fun thing to come out of this?

 

Looks like we might be able to get a pop up night to happen. Paul Harpin has expressed interest in doing a Le Bistro/Leo’s pop up! I wasn’t around when those places were open, so I’m definitely interested in this!

 

Who else should do a pop-up night?
