Nothing To Do In Macon? Yeah, Right….
I’m always baffled when I talk to people who STILL say there’s “nothing to do” in Macon.
Let’s take a look starting tonight, for instance, we have the 11th Hour Awards Show– I’ll be fitting in my appearance during a work break but I am making sure to go. And I’ll be presenting an award!
Then there’s the champange after party at Bourbon Bar- still on tonight, folks.
Friday is another action packed night with items from Historic Macon, the 567, Gallery West and the Cox Capitol.
Gallery West:
“Gallery West is hosting an artist reception on Friday, April 8 from 5 to 8 pm. Wine, beer, soft drinks and light appetizers will be served.
Derek McCabe is a professional concert photographer who has captured many musical icons in very colorful and vibrant pictures. He will be hanging 70 examples of his best work. The exhibit will run from 4/8 to 4/30.”
The 567:
“‘New Work from the Old School’ is an exhibit of work by Mercer University art students, including both art majors and non-majors who have taken university art classes. A variety of mediums will be included in the exhibit.
The opening reception will be April 8, 6-9 pm and include light refreshments. The exhibit will be on display April 8-29. The gallery is free and open to the public.”
Historic Macon:
“The Hard Hat Party gives you the chance to see the Design House before the transformation begins! The event will be held at 1388 Calhoun Street on Thursday, April 7 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A light meal, beer and wine will be served. Admission is $25/person in advance and $30/person at the door.
This year, Historic Macon will host a barbeque sauce competition! Pulled pork will be provided but we’re asking everyone to pull out their favorite recipes for sauces and sides.”
Cox Capitol Theatre:
The Capitol will host Billy Joe Shaver starting at 8:00 p.m. Here’s an excerpt from The 11th Hour’s Brad Evans interview with him: “I read somewhere today that you and Waylon Jennings blew up a honkey tonk back in the day. Is that true? Well he did, I ain’t taking no credit for that.” Be sure to go and read the facisnating story on The 11th Hour.
And all of that was just on Friday! What about Saturday?
Saturday is even MORE JAM-PACKED. I don’t know how I’m going to do it all! First of all, I’m going to wear some shoes I can walk in. Why? Let’s get started:
Yoga at Tattnall Square Park:
“Hello Yoga Lovers – This week’s event will be moved to the other side of the park due to Bearstock events gearing up for their opening at 1 PM. Parking will be street only, on Oglethorpe, Adams and College but NOT Coleman. Coleman will be blocked off for the Bearstock Festival. Not to worry, the coordinators of Bearstock said we would be OK there.
Our teacher this week is Jennifer Pittard of the Wellness Center. Bring your own mat, some sunglasses, sunscreen and water. I also recommend a towel or blanket to lay your mat on to keep the grass off.
Remember the class is all levels, free and open to the public. Bring your mama & daddy & them. (LOL) We do encourage donations to show the teacher our appreciation.
Come on out to our lovely park and feel the good vibrations of a community at work and play together.
Namaste’, y’all!”
Bearstock:
“Bearstock is Mercer University’s annual day long music festival. Held at Macon’s historic Tattnall Square Park, Bearstock is the biggest event put on by QuadWorks, the campus event planning board at MU! Bearstock is known for providing an amazing experience between the Mercer and Macon communities by bringing nationally known artists as headliners and by supporting local musicians. It’s a fun, friendly atmosphere where kids can come play on the playground, local vendors can sell concessions, and students from Macon colleges can interact with each other all at the same time. And best of all, it is FREE and open admission to anyone who wants to enjoy the festivities!”
