New Foodie Fun Discoveries: Macon Edition
Every now and then, I have a discovery that kind of slaps me in the face- saying something like “you’ve never been here?! Really?! What is WRONG with you?!” This week had one of those.
My friend and Macon sports media personality Bill Shanks has been telling me about Steve’s Steaks and Seafood for a while now, and because it’s outside my usual downtown Macon realm I just never have made it out there. Which is ridiculous given that I will and have been known to drive out of town for a good food discovery.
It was when I asked a friend of mine, fellow blogger Law Momma, to meet me there that I realized- Steve is not a newcomer to this business by any stretch of the imagination. While Steve’s Steaks and Seafood might have been around for a few years (I forgot to ask how long), his mother before him owned Polly’s Corner Cafe- back when there was nothing on Zebulon Road. Law Momma herself, now a vegetarian, said their burgers were the BEST in Macon. The best burgers in Macon. And Steve’s makes them the same way.
Now, I didn’t get the burger for lunch. I didn’t find out the above handy nugget of information until after ordering the fried shrimp. I try to stay away from fried foods, but this was amazing. The shrimp were light and fresh- the hushpuppies were awesome. All of it was really, really good. Law Momma got the grilled shrimp, and ate the salad around it before delving in to the shrimp to “save the best for last” and said it was totally worth it.
So, needless to say, I’m going to have to go back to try this famed burger. AND on Tuesdays they have a special where you can get two burgers and two drinks, or something like that, for only $10. Which kind of blows my mind a little bit. Do me a favor- try them out and let me know what you think!
The weekend prior did not involve a new discovery, at least not one I will write about here- because I also did my Dublin trip then and that’s a WHOLE other story which I am working on presently as well- but I did go to Dovetail for brunch. I have to say, it’s always interesting to me how I can generally get seated so much faster at Dovetail than I can at Rookery. The prices are pretty much the same, and the menu is ever evolving. If you ever go to Rookery for brunch and don’t want to wait- I suggest you try upstairs. I’ve taken my kids there before with no issue, and I see plenty of others doing the same thing. And I also don’t feel the pressure to be in my Sunday best, I feel totally comfortable in shorts and a t shirt.
So, what kinds of food discoveries will YOU make this week? Go ahead and have some fun and do something different…
Love to all y’all,
Molly
