Music Monday: St. Paul & The Broken Bones

Anytime an artist cites Otis Redding as an inspiration, I take special notice. St. Paul & The Broken Bones are a band that I have recently fallen in love with, listening them on constant repeat, and their lead singer has said my hometown hero served as an inspiration in his late teens.
That much is made even more apparent when listening to the Birmingham, AL based band perform a cover of one of Redding’s hits:
I’m usually rather protective, sometimes offended even, when I hear newer bands perform a cover of a classic. Call me silly, sure, especially for being somewhat “new” to paying attention to up and coming bands. But that’s how I am. Except with this one. This cover feels both authentic and true to the original, putting their own spin on it without overinterpretation.
Which is one reason I’m so excited about their upcoming show here in Macon at the Cox Capitol Theatre. The show is already sold out, and I’ve already got my ticket in my hand. Or, well, in my email inbox at least.
I love their story almost as much as their sound. They have members whose background range from work at Muscle Shoals FAME Studios, brass players from Birmingham based Samford University’s music program, and a lead singer who was brought up in a strict religious household- trained to be a preacher- cut grass at times to get by- studied accounting- and finally landed where God so clearly intended for him to be. Praise be to the Lord for gracing us with this sound!
Janeway’s voice feels like the most moving of Southern preachers bringing us to the altar of his music. Come on down and take the communion with us, if you can find tickets, when St. Paul & the Broken Bones arrives in Macon. God knows I’m so excited about this one, y’all. Just take a listen and I guarantee you’ll understand.
This one happens to be my favorite so far, and it’s called “Sugar Dyed”. I challenge you to NOT get up and dance, I know I can’t resist:
Love to all y’all,
Molly
