Macon Native Returns to Local Theater
Coming to Macon at the Douglas Theater on April 11th is a unique play called “Four Broke Guys”. From the title one might assume that they will see four different actors onstage, but in fact each character is portrayed by one man named J. Shawn Durham. Chris Nylund (of the local band MagTard) is the musical director and Tony Richard (co-founder of Richard Hunter Productions) serves as the theater director. A Macon native, J. Shawn Durham returns to present this one-man show about four penniless men and their struggles with women.
The comedy is loosely based on Durham’s book (available for purchase on Amazon.com) titled, “The Broke Brothers’ Revolution” which explores the gender bias present at nightclubs in the form of ladies night and men being responsible for purchasing drinks. The play which is part comedy, part drama poses the question of whether the “revolutionaries” are simply “broke” or “broken”.
But before one assumes this performance is seeking to speak disparagingly about women, Durham assures that he is simply trying to tell the other half of the story, “Maybe some men don’t have all the answers. Maybe some men have insecurities. I wanted to explore those things. I’m not trying to piss women off. But I want to push the “pause” button on a few things regarding both men and women and their expectations of each other.”
One unique aspect of the live performance will be the use of film. Before each character is presented, a short film vignette will be featured. At the end of the presentation, Durham will appear onstage as that character. “It’s going to be a challenge, but it’s a fun challenge. The characters all have their different quirks and it will be important for the audience to see why these men may be broken. Carlos is a good man, but he’s a pushover. Daniel is a reckless womanizer. Oscar is a hard luck romantic and Gent is trying to escape a tragedy. The show runs the gamut of emotions and there is something in there for everyone.”
