“It’s a funny thing about coming home….” pt 1
I know that when I write posts here, most people expect them to be sports related, and that makes sense. But last week, I was home for vacation and it was honestly one of the best vacations I ever got to take. I got to see my family and friends, I helped Coach with Mercer’s basketball camp (yep I was on vacation and still ended up working…typical), I was able to just sit back and chill.
To preface things, I may live in Austin now, but I’m a born and bred Georgia peach. I was raised in Macon, went to high school in Macon, went to college in Georgia, and basically lived in all of Georgia’s major cities (except Columbus and Savannah.) So coming back to Macon, after having lived in Austin for little over a year, was strange. The quote from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is so true; “It’s a funny thing about coming home. Nothing changes. Everything looks the same, feels the same, even smells the same. You realized what’s changed, is you.”
Because I was only home for a week, I didn’t have a lot of time to do a ton of stuff I wanted to do, like taking a day trip to the beach or go to a Braves game. BUT I did get to roam around Macon, and I have to say, even though I’m a Maconite, treating Macon like I was a tourist, definitely made for a fun few days.
My mom picked me up from the airport on Wednesday night. Thursday I spent the day running errands. Anyways, Thursday night, my parents asked me where I wanted to eat dinner at, and of course, acting like a tourist in my hometown, I said Dovetail. I wanted something that I couldn’t get in Austin, and Dovetail fit the bill perfectly. I’ve eaten at Dovetail plenty of times, my mom once or twice, but this was my dad’s first time at Dovetail, so it was definitely fun getting to see his reactions to everything!
We started off dinner with the cheese plate. Our waiter, for the love me I can’t remember his name, told us that one of the cheeses had just come in. It was a spicy Spanish cheese and oh my goodness gracious, that was literally some of the best cheese I’ve ever eaten, I could easily make grilled cheese sandwiches out of that for the rest of my life and be completely content. The cheese plate also had a bleu cheese crumble, a brie, pecans, and a bacon marmalade. And y’all, the fresh jam and hot bread straight out of the oven really complimented the cheese plate very nicely.
Now if you’ve never been to Dovetail, or have been and you haven’t gotten a chance to try one of their cocktails, I highly recommend getting over there and trying one. I ended up getting the House Fashion, which is bourbon, whiskey bitters, simple syrup, a splash of soda, and a flamed orange rind. The House Fashion was right up my alley, it had great flavor and the bourbon was strong but not overpowering.
For dinner, we each had something completely different, which I loved because that meant getting to try a little bit of everything off the menu.
My mom got the Georgia Fresh Salad, which has sliced green tomatoes, Tomme cheese, bacon marmalade, and a Vidalia onion vinaigrette. She absolutely raved about it, and the very small bite that I got to have of it was extremely refreshing. It is definitely one of those dishes that is absolutely perfect for summers in Georgia because of how light it is.
My dad got the Peanut Crusted Trout Filet. Overall, he said he really enjoyed it, the fish was cooked really well and he loved the seasoning and flavoring of the trout. The only thing he didn’t really care for was the lemon and English pea mash, he said it had good flavor but it was a bit too cold for his liking.
Now, for me. 🙂 I had one of the newer things that Chef has introduced on the menu, the shrimp puttanesca, and oh my goodness gracious, that is literally one of the tastiest dishes I’ve ever eaten. I love shrimp and I love pasta, and together, it’s pure deliciousness. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the capers added a nice layer of flavor to the dish! This is definitely a reorder for me, next time I’m back in town.
For dessert, we debated about either getting the chocolate creme brulee or the strawberry shortcake. We ended up getting the strawberry shortcake, which I’m glad we did, because while it was rich, it was still light and airy, and the perfect way to end dinner.
That was honestly one of the best dinners I’ve had at Dovetail, I had a great dinner and got to catch up with my parents (I know, I know so corny but I hadn’t seen them since Christmas!). Dovetail will always be in my top 5 for favorite restaurants in Macon, and if you haven’t gotten a chance to eat there yet, GO! (and tell Ryan and Sierra that I sent you 😉 )
Until next time,
Katie
