How to Layer Clothing-Courtney from As We Stumble Along
Well hello everyone-if you’ve followed my blog before, you know that I basically live for layering. I love it,it’s what makes the best outfits, the most interesting-and living in Iowa,it’s absolutely necessary. But you can’t simply just throw more clothes on-there’s a technique for layering-and today,I will tell you all of my secrets-lucky you!:P
Step 1-Choose a base.
All outfits start with a base-a simpler piece for you to layer the ‘accessory’ pieces on top of-for example,a dress, a shirt+skirt, shirt+shorts combo,a romper, etc. It’s best to choose a simpler piece,as you will choose the ‘accessory’ pieces to make the outfit more interesting, and you don’t want it to look too busy-in the outfits below, the bases are the plaid top and jeans, and my Advika Clothing Dress-I chose them because they are fairly simple, yet interesting. Of course my favorite chambray shirt is the base in many of the outfits above, because it makes such an excellent base and layering piece.
Step 2- Accessory Pieces
These are the pieces that make the outfit pop. As your base should be simple, choose accessory pieces that contrast and are bright. One of the easiest ways is to mix up the tones,if you have a warm toned peach dress,a cool toned gray or blue makes it pop-or even simpler, fits. If you have a loose base, pair it with a more fitted blazer or leggings.I chose two different cardigans in the pictures above. They both contrast with the base piece to bring dimension to the outfit and make it interesting. This is where your cardigans and jackets come in-for spring,I like to use lighter jackets or a kimono-or even for summer,a button up tank under a lighter crop top-this is where collars are especially easy. One of my favorite ways when I’m layering button-ups is to cuff the sleeves over the base top-it creates instant contrast(:
