Everything Old Is New Again
I think we all know that in fashion, the phrase “Everything Old Is New Again” is rather common. Vintage has now become a word that no longer makes us cringe, but one we embrace.
What has made me start thinking about this? Aside from the column I wrote for Macon Food and Culture about a year ago, in which I really began to see a lot of 70’s and 80’s items coming back full force, NOW we are seeing items that were in style when I was in say- middle and early high school. It’s a little bit jarring to me to see an item that being redone now in a really cute way that would make me cringe to see the way I used to wear it. Have I lost you yet?
Ok let me give a concrete example. Sheer tops. Back in the day, and I’m talking the 90’s so yeah not THAT long ago, we would wear them unbuttoned over a tank top. Or even a regular button up would be worn unbuttoned over a tank. NOW- not only are we seeing the sheer tops coming back but with the advent of the bandeau as a tank alternative we are seeing them being worn under these sheer tops. Personally- not sure I would do it as I am still working on getting my stomach back from having two kids HOWEVER I do think it’s a really cute trend. I would just wear a full tank underneath.
Another trend coming back would be wearing forms of lingerie, or lingerie inspired, where one can see it. I’ve incorporated this some myself actually- but only in mild ways. For instance just last night for the Weaver’s Weekend event I wore a Tibi shirt that only buttoned in one place- at the top of the back of the shirt- thus exposing my bra strap. To keep it cute I made sure to wear a lacy concoction from Victoria’s Secret. which also mimicked the lace on the front of the shirt.
mom told me I should wear a tank top, but really it didn’t open up this much when i wore it. however I got a TON of compliments…
This particular trend is also seen in bustier-type tops or dresses. Hell even my dress I have posted on here before from The Red Dress Boutique could be argued to be inspired by this as well due to the structure bustier top half of the dress.
That being said, it’s a little wild to see trends that were around when I was growing up coming back. What exactly does that mean? Makes me feel a little bit old- but perhaps I should simply refer to myself as “vintage” 😉
