The Deliciousness at La Delicia Grill
Let me jump ahead and say I let a co-worker who is from El Salvador sample this food…. so I feel I can safely say this is authentic Salvadorian & Mexican food (after all- I’ve never been to El Salvador).
I first saw the posts about this unassuming spot on Pio Nono from friends, past where I used to work at Enterprise, past Gold Cup Bowling, near Rocky Creek Road. Always the willing food explorer I got my boyfriend to tag along and we headed out during my lunch break today.
First of all, the prices can’t be beat. Less than $2 for a single taco or pupusas. Horchatas and tamarinds are $1.50.
I opted for the “Loroco y Queso” pupusas and the combination plate of rice & beans and tacos el pastor. My boyfriend insisted I also get the horchata to drink.
First off, a pupusa is a Salvadorian dish made with a thick, handmade corn tortilla. When the Salvadorian chef where I work saw me bring this in to my desk her eyes lit up and she told me that this was a very authetic dish and I coaxed her into trying it so I could get her feedback. She saw the loroco and commented on it before trying, she seemed surprised that I had chosen to order this type of pupusa- and I’ll admit my own ignorance in not knowing that loroco is a Salvadorian vine flower bud. It just sounds different from the other options!
I thought it was yummy and so did my co-worker.
The tacos el pastor were amazing! When you get the combo plate you get a lovely lightly seasoned rice, refried beans, and LOTS of el pastor meat and veggies- with corn tortilla wrapped up separately to make you own tacos.
Horchata, I almost forgot to get back to this, is a drink with varying descriptions. The one I had tasted milky and definitely had cinnamon in it.
It’s a ton of really good food for not a whole lot of money. The setting is very unassuming, we ate at a foldout table in front of what could graciously be called a food truck, and some kind of side building which holds restrooms and a cooler for waters. And it was damn good.
If you love good, simple, authentic food then you’ll also love La Delicia Grill at 3340 Pio Nono Avenue.
Love to all y’all,
Molly
