Buy Black Downtown Macon Tour and more
This Saturday, December 12th, is the Buy Black Downtown Macon Tour.
From their Facebook event page: “NewTown Macon, One World Link, Ambitious Graphics, and Bluxe Beauty Bar & Salon are providing an opportunity for the public to learn about the wonderful black-owned businesses in the downtown Macon area. This event is family-friendly and FREE! Join us on Saturday, December 12th for a self guided tour of black-owned businesses in Downtown Macon and a panelist event featuring black downtown business owners including Solomon Sands (Global Soles), Wayne Woodard (Ambitious Graphics), Brandi Smith (Bluxe Beauty Bar & Salon), Anissa Jones (Total Health Chiropractic) & Cierra Johnson (Say Yes 2 the Address). Bethany Rogers from NewTown Macon will also speak about the resources her organization offers to new and existing business owners. To take the tour, stop by downtown at Ambitious Graphics, between 2:00PM and 5:00PM to pick up a tour map. The map will include the 20 stops. This first annual tour will be self-guided so participants can take the tour at their own pace and maintain a safe social distance. Per local mandate, masks and social distancing are required at all times when participating in the tour. Upon completing the self-guided walking tour, go to Crave Scratch Kitchen to enjoy light refreshments. Tour-goers who wish to attend the panel and speaker event should arrive at Crave by 5:45pm. Due to COVID-19 limited seating capacity will be provided. Please register in advance for the panelists event on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/…/buy-black-downtown-macon…Downtown Macon boasts 32 retailers, 52 restaurants, 6 art galleries, 33 bars and entertainment venues, and 5 historic theaters. All are locally owned and operated. Black Owned businesses make up 7 retailers, 4 bar and entertainment venues, 1 Historic theater and 1 art gallery making up only 10% of businesses in those categories.
When you shop local, you’re supporting your fellow community members. For every $100 spent with a locally owned business, $68 stays in the community. Purchasing any item at a local Black-owned business not only supports Black American businesses during this unprecedented time, but it is also an investment in back into the Macon-Bibb community.”
One thing that stands out to me is the note that only 10% of downtown businesses are Black owned, so it’s all the more important that we as a community support them.
I, personally, will be in one of my last yoga teacher training classes during that time however- I’m going to make a note to be sure and visit these businesses on the following weekend!
Along with Black owned businesses in downtown Macon, there are many more I like to support. One of my favorites is The Cooke Shoppe– and their Loofah Soap! They also make an amazing tea. Two of my favorite Macon-based photographers are DSTO Moore and Michael Martin.
Do you have a favorite Black owned business you support? Comment on social media and drop their handle so we can shout them out!
Love to all y’all,
Molly
