Back City Woods are back in town!

Back City Woods is a band that I have had the pleasure of seeing grow and expand throughout the years. Combining bluegrass with can’t-sit-still, rollicking rock elements, they are definitely a Macon favorite and certainly one of my personal favorites. Along with Packway Handle and the Law Band, they will be performing this Friday at the Cox Capital Theatre. And if their previous high-energy performances are any indicator, this is one you shouldn’t miss! I got a chance to pick the brain of their front man and all around good guy, Daniel NeSmith. Here’s what he had to say…

What have you been up to since the release of your EP, Around the Bend?
We have played a lot of cool shows since the release of our last EP. We got to play at Turner Field before a Braves game, which was sweet since we are all fans! We’ve played the 40 Watt, the Hangout in Gulf Shores Alabama, and Dixie Tavern just to name a few. We’ve also been busy writing new material that pushes the envelope of what we’ve done in the past.

What can we expect from Friday’s show?
We’ll be starting at 8:00 pm and playing for an hour followed by Packway Handle at 9:00 pm. and The Law Band at 10:00pm. We’ll be debuting lots of new songs and even instruments that Macon fans haven’t gotten to hear yet. You can always expect us to have a lively performance with the typical high energy that we always do, that hasn’t changed….

What is your favorite thing about performing live?
Performing live is like a shot in the arm of energy and a load of stress being lifted from our backs. We have a blast on stage and want to leave the audience in a different place, emotionally and mentally than when they walk in.

How does playing Macon differ from the other cities BCW plays?
Macon is where it all started for us, so we really love playing to our audience here. Out of all the cities we have played in Macon seems to get what we are doing better than the rest. People aren’t afraid of our genre and different interpretation on traditional musical styles.

What is your favorite song to play live?
I doubt we can all agree on one song, but among the top ones are, Hardcore Truckin’, Three Word Sound, and our new songs, A Boy My Age, and The Morning Breaks…

I noticed you were nominated for the 11th Hour Reader’s Choice Awards. If you win, what would be a line from your acceptance speech?
Thank you for supporting our musical journey into new and unknown lands. We hope the best is yet to come!

What melts your “heart of stone”?
That’s an interesting question, I would say for me, (Daniel) it would be my two kids. My heart turns to warm jello around them.

What is your favorite thing about being in Back City Woods?
Being in the band is a very exciting thing for us. It’s an outlet that few people get to experience especially with people that all get along. We all bring different things to the table, so it’s cool sharing ideas and the energy we feel on stage.

If you were to have a fan show up to a gig with a homemade sign for the band, what do you wish it would say?
ONE MORE SONG! I love encores…

What do you think waits “around the bend” for BCW?
We plan on recording a full length album starting later this year. Up to now we’ve only done EP’s. It will be a diverse ablum with some of our older rock and bluegrassy sounds, but we’ll also be charting new territory with some more modern sounds. We’re excited about it.

Anything else?
We just want to get people out early for the show, normally we cater to a late crowd, but we’ll be playing at 8pm, instead of our normal 11:00 set time

On that note…I will leave you with one of my favorite of theirs!
