A Season for Giving

There’s something about the magic of the holidays. Gettings gifts for friends and family and the idea of spreading joy. I’d like to think this is what inspires so many to give back at this time of year. With that said, I’m going to highlight some of the places and groups that I know of which are giving back big in my community:

Layaway Santa- Middle Georgia

“What started off as a last-minute effort to pay off some layaway accounts for needy families in 2013 has grown to a grassroots movement of volunteers and donors who change the lives of families during the holiday season across Middle Georgia. Last year Layaway Santa – Middle Georgia paid off  accounts totaling more than $13,000

Because of your support, the dedication of our team members, and the coverage by our local media, this year again will truly be a Merry Christmas for dozens of Middle Georgia families.

You can help again this year by donating and volunteering. The deadline for donations this year is December 23rd. Email us at midgalayawaysanta@gmail.com for more information or inquire here.” Go to their GoFundMe here.

Socks In A Box Macon

Ok I’m biased here, because this is my son’s idea:

“Bishop Wilkins had this concern, and wanted to do something about it. While talking with his mother about what they could do for his Fellowship & Duty to God badge for Cub Scouts, he thought he could take action to help the homeless in his community. He spoke with a representative from Daybreak in Macon, Georgia and came up with the idea to collect socks! He decided to name his efforts “Socks in a Box”- with the help of his sister Lily Kate, decorated some boxes with Christmas paper (with the wrapping help of his mother & her boyfriend), and set out to ask local businesses to help him in this endeavor.

Collection boxes are set up at Travis Jean Emporium, 7th Street Salvage, and Z Bean Coffee but you can also make donation directly to Daybreak online through their website here.” Go to website for more info.

Crisis Line & Safe House – Macon

This is one of my favorite charitable organizations in general, but they are also asking for people to “adopt” one of their shelter residents for Christmas.

I’m collecting items for a 35 year old female who is in need of size 10 pants, large size shirts, size 9 shoes, pots & pans, pajama sets, a twin blanket, towels, slippers, hats/gloves/scarf set, and hair products for an African-American female. There doesn’t appear to be a public post about this, but I got my info from friends who work there. If you’re interested in helping, just message me through the Southern Bon Vivant Facebook page.

Kids Yule Love – Macon

“We are a nonprofit organization focused on helping to bring a Merry Christmas to underprivileged children and seniors in nursing homes with no family. Kids Yule Love provides toys, gifts and bibles for children and seniors which gives them a message of hope, love and inspiration.” To help you can drop off toys at drop box locations around the community, I know there’s one at Advanced Dental Arts in north Macon.

These are just a few of the organizations that I know that are giving back during the holiday season, so please let me know in the comments about others so I can add them!

I’ll also say, one thing that I realized while writing this is how I have to give back all year. It’s nice to spread Christmas spirit during the holidays, but it would be even nicer to do it all of the time. I think this is something we’re all missing these days.

Love to all y’all,
