A Quick and Easy Artsy Mother’s Day Art Project

I walked in Kmart the other day and saw small clay pots on sale for $.79. It reminded me of a Mother’s Day project I did with my students years ago.

Supplies needed:

  • 1 small clay pot
  • White, yellow, magenta/red, turquoise tempera or acrylic paint or craft paint
  • 1 paint brush
  • 1 water pot for water
  • Paper towels/sponge
  • Covering for work area
  • Clear glossy polyurethane spray

Directions:

  • Paint the clay pot white
  • While wet,  paint or stamp with brush to create texture with turquoise paint
  • While still wet, paint with yellow paint grass lines and stems and leaves. The yellow should mix with the turquoise to make green.
  • Still painting with wet surfaces, paint magenta petals for flowers on top of the stems. The magenta may mix with the turquoise to make purple.
  • Use the handle end of the brush. Dip it into yellow paint and stamp centers of the flowers.
  • Let the pot dry thoroughly and spray with polyurethane.

Here is an example. I scratched a vine into the paint with the handle end of my brush on the rim of the pot.
